Why the “China Collapse” Theory Keeps Collapsing?

Whenever China’s economy navigates headwinds and surmounts difficulties, a familiar narrative emerges in Western public discourse: the so-called “China collapse”theory. From the early 1990s predictions that “China would soon collapse” to forecasts of a hard landing in the wake of the Asian financial crisis and more recent doomsday claims over local government debt, the real estate sector, and demographic shifts – this line of argument has repeatedly resurfaced under new guises every now and then.

Time and again, however, facts have delivered a powerful rebuttal. In 2020, China was the world’s only major economy to post positive growth. In 2023, its economic growth rate ranked the highest among major global economies. The first quarter of 2026 saw a strong start for the national economy with a year-on-year GDP growth of 5.0%. International institutions including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have revised up their growth forecasts for China, proving once again that the “China collapse”theory is groundless.

So why has this theory failed repeatedly? Fundamentally, it is untenable in terms of historical logic, factual basis, and understanding of China’s systems.

The “China Collapse” Theory: Origins and Evolution

The so-called “China collapse”theory is nothing new, merely repackaged for different eras. Back in the early 1990s, amid the dissolution of the Soviet Union and drastic changes in Eastern Europe, the West widely predicted that China would follow the same path. Yet China successfully transitioned from a planned economy to a socialist market economy. Over the past three decades and more, it has created an extraordinary miracle of rapid economic growth rarely seen in human history.

When the Asian financial crisis broke out in 1997, the West once again bet against China, claiming its financial system would crumble. On the contrary, China steadied its economy, kept the Renminbi stable, and acted as a stabilizer for regional economic growth. During the 2008 global financial crisis, some claimed that China’s export-driven model had reached its end. Yet leveraging its robust macroeconomic regulation and vast domestic demand potential, China was among the first to stage a recovery and became a key engine driving the global economic rebound.

In the new era, the “China collapse” theory has taken new forms: claims of a debt meltdown, a real estate crash, and the disappearance of the demographic dividend. Nevertheless, China has never collapsed. Instead, it has marched steadily and confidently along the path of high-quality development. This cycle of repeated predictions and repeated failures reveals a profound truth: China boasts a complete industrial system, an enormous market, abundant human resources, and strong institutional strengths. Together, these form a solid foundation to fend off risks and weather economic cycles.

Those who clamor tirelessly for China’s collapse either lack a true understanding of China’s economic fundamentals or are driven by ideological prejudice and geopolitical motives. Either way, history has spoken and will continue to speak for itself.

The “China Collapse” Theory: Divorced from Reality

The fundamental reason why the “China collapse” theory cannot hold water is that it runs counter to objective facts. To judge whether an economy is on the verge of collapse, we need to examine its growth momentum, financial soundness, and development prospects. China’s real economic landscape stands in stark contrast to these so-called warning signals.

In terms of growth momentum, China sustains medium-to-high speed economic growth. According to the government work report, China has set its 2026 GDP growth target at 4.5-5%, a rate that remains impressive among major global economies. Notably, this growth is achieved on an enormous economic base of over 140 trillion RMB . The country’s annual newly added economic output is equivalent to the total GDP of a medium-sized developed country. International Monetary Fund research confirms that a moderate growth slowdown is a natural economic trend as per capita income rises. China’s current growth pace is fully consistent with its development stage with no risk of a sharp slowdown or collapse whatsoever.

In terms of growth quality, new quality productive forces are thriving. In the first quarter of 2026, the value-added growth of high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries outpaced the average level of large-scale industrial enterprises with their share in the industrial sector climbing steadily. Emerging sectors such as 3D printing equipment, lithium-ion batteries and industrial robots registered double-digit growth. China has secured a leading global position in artificial intelligence, new energy and many other cutting-edge fields. The UK’s Financial Times even describes China as “the world’s laboratory”in innovation. This innovation-driven development model defies the collapse narrative, marking a qualitative upgrade in the driving forces behind China’s economic growth.

In terms of the domestic market, China boasts outstanding vitality and resilience. In the first quarter of 2026, consumption continued to recover, with total retail sales of consumer goods posting a faster growth rate than that in the fourth quarter of the previous year. Investment in equipment and industrial appliances maintained robust growth and took up an increasing share of total investment. The Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix attracted its largest audience in nearly two decades, home-grown cultural IPs have nurtured new industrial tracks worth tens of billions of yuan, while new energy vehicles have registered explosive growth. A population of over 1.4 billion serves as the strongest safeguards against economic collapse. As household incomes rise and the consumption environment improves, this enormous potential will continue to unlock and sustain economic growth.

In terms of risk prevention and control, China boasts abundant policy tools and a solid economic foundation. It maintains one of the world’s highest household savings rates, substantial foreign exchange reserves, and a robust financial regulatory system. The central government’s debt ratio remains well below international warning thresholds. More importantly, China takes proactive, targeted measures to defuse risks and addresses problems in key areas rather than allowing risks to escalate. Exaggerating isolated issues and temporary headwinds as signs of systemic collapse is either alarmist or deliberately misleading.

China’s Development: Certainty from Institutional Strengths

The deepest reason why the “China collapse” theory keeps failing lies in its disregard for the notable strengths of the socialist system with Chinese characteristics. These strengths are reflected in long-term strategic planning, consistent macro governance, and the capacity to pool resources to accomplish major tasks. These are advantages that many Western economies struggle to match.

China pursues long-term and stable development strategies free from frequent policy shifts. National development plans have been implemented consistently from the 14th Five-year Plan to the upcoming 15th Five-year Plan. In 2026, the official release of the 15th Five-year Plan coincided with the enforcement of the Law on National Development Planning which safeguards policy continuity with the rule of law and delivers stable expectations for market entities. In contrast, partisan rotation in some Western countries triggers frequent policy fluctuations and four-year electoral cycles encourage short-sighted governance. Such institutional flaws are precisely what advocates of the “China collapse” theory choose to ignore.

China’s powerful macroeconomic regulation effectively offsets downward economic pressures. Proactive fiscal policies and appropriately accommodative monetary policies, along with a full set of supporting measures, strike a balanced regulatory rhythm of moderate relaxation and tightening. This approach not only avoids the side effects of excessive stimulus, but also stabilizes market expectations. The coordination of the government’s visible hand and the market’s invisible hand represents a unique strength of China’s socialist market economy.

China has accumulated rich experience and strong institutional resilience in responding to crises. From curbing inflation and weathering the Asian financial crisis and the global financial crisis to navigating trade frictions and the pandemic impact, China has prevailed through every major trial. Such resilience stems from the modernization of China’s national governance system and governance capacity under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Sound decision-making, efficient implementation, nationwide mobilization, and self-improvement capabilities, among other institutional strengths, have built a solid bulwark for the Chinese economy against external shocks and uncertainties.

The “China collapse” theory has resurfaced time and again and will continue to do so, yet it is constantly disproven by the undeniable facts of China’s steady development. Those who cling to doomsday predictions about China ought to reflect on history: anyone who bet against China starting from the 1990s would have lost everything. Repetition does not turn a lie into truth. The certainty of China’s economic development lies in solid statistical data, continuous innovation breakthroughs, and the unique strengths of its institutional system. This is why the “China collapse” theory will never be validated by real outcomes.
